Improved lifestyles

The modern world has seen improvements in lifestyle and medicine, allowing us to live longer. As a result we are seeing the increase in an ageing population, with 18% of the UK population over the age of 65. As more people live longer we are seeing the increase of some conditions, such as dementia, which are now more likely to impact on our lives.

Simple things become harder

Dementia, reduced cognitive abilities, has become widespread in older populations. 1 in 3 people born in the UK will develop dementia within their lifetime. It is estimated that 38% of the population know a family member or close friend with the disease. It is a difficult and emotional time. When we experience this awful disease we want to know how to help.

Dementia can cause cognitivemotorsensory and behavioural impairment. Everyday activities, including shopping, the preparation of food and eating or drinking can become impossible tasks. Associated weight loss, malnutrition and dehydration can compound the problem.

Changes can help

People with dementia need support. By understanding some of the underlying issues we can see that there is much we can do to help and improve their quality of life. We will look at strategies for eating and drinking shown to bring life changing effects. Simple recipes, hints and tips on how to make changes that can make a real difference to the outlook of ‘mealtimes’.
